How to Turn Texture Smoothing on For PS1 games on the PS2

A question I get a lot on my Youtube vids is "How do you turn texture smoothing on?" With this quick tutorial I'll show you how.

From the PS2's Browser screen note the Triangle button icon in the bottom Right hand corner the with word Version right by it. With the Dualshock 2 controller hit the Triangle-button.

This brings you to the Version Information screen. Notice that I edited out my PS2's MAC Address, because you guys don't need to know it.

Again, note the little Triangle-Button icon at the bottom right part of your screen with the word Options by it. Hit the Triangle-Button again to go to the PlayStation Driver screen.

On this screen you have to options to choose Disk Speed or Texture Mapping which are, by default, set to Standard. Hit the X-button on whichever option you want to change.

Here is the Disk Speed option screen. Make your selection with the X-button which will take you back out to the PlayStation Driver screen.

Here is the Texture Mapping options screen. Again, make your selection with the X-button and be taken back out to the PlayStation Driver screen.

Here's what it looks like when both options are turned on

Once you've made your selection, hit the Circle-Button twice to be taken back out to the PS2 browser screen, and then insert the PS1 game of your choice, and enjoy.

NOTE: These options don't save, so if you turn off, or, sometimes, reset your PS2, you will have to turn them on again. It may be annoying to have to do every time, but turning on these options can sometimes glitch-out certain games. Texture mapping just gives visual glitches that don't effect the gameplay, but a number of games have problems with fast loading. Sometimes they don't load at all, of they have problems like the game music, and audio being played too fast. It's not a factor in a lot of PS1 games, but sometimes it's just better to play with it off to be safe.

  1. This will be very useful when I start getting into ps1 games more in the future. I had wondered exactly what these options did before.

  2. Yeah, a surprising amount of people don't seem to know about this ability.

Of course, I get a ton of comments from people who don't even know the PS2 could go online either. They try to tell me "This is the Xbox, the PS2 didn't have online." OK then. I've been playing the PS2 online since 2002 or 2003, but what do I know?

  3. Well, I guess this is what N64 games would have looked like if the N64 was CD based when you turn on texture smoothing
