Yesterday (08-31-10) was my birthday, so aside from a few non-gaming related presents, I got these three games for a mere $20 each.
Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)-
Yep, I've officially had my PS3 for a year, and only just now got around to MGS4. Why would I wait so long you ask? Well, because I have to be in a special mood to play a MGS game. Not so much with the original, but they are quite involving, and MGS4 is perhaps the most involved from a storyline perspective. It's not the the MGS series isn't great, but I just have to be in a special mood to play them. After a year of putting it off, I finally took the plunge, and bought the game. I haven't gotten too far into it yet (have been sidetracked by the other two games I bought with it), but I like what I've played so far. I already know how it ends, but it's never about how it ends, but the journey getting there that matters as far as I'm concerned.
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (PS3)-
This was just a cheap buy, and I decided to give it a chance. I played the original on the 360 when a friend let me borrow it, and it was OK, but way too scripted. This one's better then the original, but still has those annoying scripted scenes. It's not bad for a $20 buy, but I would never had paid $60 for it.
I haven't taken this one online yet either, but the online play should be decent. I'm not saying it's a bad game at all, it's just way too scripted, but it's worth the $20 I paid for it.
Assassin's Creed (PS3)-
I, again borrowed the 360 version of this game from a friend not too long after it came out, and I really enjoyed it despite some repetitive gameplay elements. I still have my save for the 360 version, but I decided to get this game on the PS3 instead.
I find the positives in this game outweigh the negatives for me, and it sucks me in for hours of play at a time. It's not exactly a sandbox game, I mean it is in some ways, but plays more like an action adventure game in an open world. It doesn't have a lot of the cliches of that genre in it.
There aren't any trophies in this game, so I can't show off to my friends how much better I am than them at the game, Gosh, I guess I'll just have to play the game, because I enjoy it. I'm not really into the whole gamerscore/trophy thing anyways. For some people it extends the game for them, but a game has to make me want to complete it 100% in it's gameplay before I'd care enough to get all the gamerpoints/trophies in it. If it's acquiring something in the game that gives you a new feature, then I'll go for the achievement/trophy. Otherwise, I won't usually go out of my way to earn either. Not my thing. I prefer to just enjoy my games, and going for all that stuff makes gaming feel more like a chore than something fun at times.
I also have a PS1 game on order called Shooter: Space Shot. It was one of those budget titles released at the end of the system's life, and looks like a decent Shmup. It probably won't be the greatest, but it looks to be a good low-cost PS1 shmup. I also have an Xbox shmup called Xyanide on order as well, but that's not a PS system game, so I won't be covering it here.
Here is the only Gameplay footage I could find on Youtube of Shooter Space Shot, and it's a review submitted by Youtube user thegoon02:
Happy birthday man, those are some insanely good deals. Prepare to be blown away by MGS4. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts as you progress.
